Grassy Ridge - Roan Mountain
“It is the most beautiful mountain east of the Rockies,” Asa Gray (1810-1888) said as he explored the Roan Highlands in 1841. That’s where he discovered a new lily named after him - Gray’s lily, Lilium grayi, a rare flower found in only a few places in Western North Carolina.
The hike starts at Carvers Gap at 5,512 feet. Go north on the Appalachian Trail through an opening in the fence. When the trail goes left, continue on a good trail up to Grassy Ridge. The views from the trail and Grassy Ridge are outstanding.
Grassy Ridge is at 6,190 feet. Because of the exposure and altitude, it is always windy here. Take an extra layer of clothing.
