Max Patch

maxpatch.jpg

At 4,630 feet, Max Patch is an open, grassy summit with glorious views. Tourists come to exercise their dogs, fly kites, picnic and just hang out. One writer suggested that it is the perfect place to propose. Appalachian Trail hikers consider Max Patch one of the highlights of their journey and a spot they will remember, long after they’ve forgotten the details of most of their trek.

On this hike, you walk to Max Patch first and then get on the Appalachian Trail, North to Lemon Gap and back. In the spring, fields of trilliums, geraniums and other flowers take over. Put a small flower book in your pack to help you identify all the species you’ll find.

An access trail leads from the parking area to the A.T. At 0.5 miles, take the A.T. South to the top of Max Patch. Enjoy the top of the world feeling but hold on to your hat because Max Patch is always windy. Retrace your steps and go A.T. North to Lemon Gap. Return the same way.
