Dupont State Forest and Flat Rock
Dupont State Forest is the most visited state forest in North Carolina, with six outstanding waterfalls and several lakes. It was saved from development by a last minute outcry from the public. The state took the land by eminent domain.
The Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site has several miles of easy walking. Carl and Lillian Steichen lived in Flat Rock for over twenty years.
The Green River Game Lands have 16 miles of trails, not often used by the public.
